The hand of Costanza Conti

History in a nutshell:

As promised we tell you the story of a beautiful girl who lived in Rome in the early 1600s. Her name was Costanza Conti. The thing that struck everyone who saw her, however, were her hands and for this reason she was envied by all the ladies of Rome. The young woman went to marry the nephew of Cardinal Giandomenico De Cupis, her beauty remained such even after her marriage, to the point that an artist named Bastiano asked her to make a cast to show them to everyone in his workshop. The cast became so famous for its beauty that people went to see it on pilgrimage as if it were a relic.
Legend has it that one day a friar, seeing the crowd admiring that hand, said: “If that hand is human, it deserves to be cut off!” It seemed, in fact, that people admired that piece of chalk more than the Holy Cross.
